ZEPHYR MUSIC CAMP 2006 CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY
Ten years ago, in 1996, the Villa Sinfonia Foundation board members and friends
visited the peaceful Zephyr Point Presbyterian Retreat Center on the southern
shore of Lake Tahoe for a week of chamber music and to get a sense of whether
this site would work as a music camp. Impressed with its beauty and serenity and
accommodations, the decision was made to return the following summer.
We started out with one lodge and now use two lodges and two cabins. Initially,
the camp was one session long but it has since expanded to two sessions. Campers
are kept busy during their week at Zephyr. They have their delicious (really!)
meals in the cafeteria. However, each lodge is equipped with a full kitchen if
campers choose to prepare their own meals. Campers participate in two chamber
ensembles daily coached by professional musicians and in the second session,
also play in an orchestra. There is no television (except for camp movie night).
Concerts are at noon and in the evening, and campers practice during free time,
and in the afternoon have time for swimming at the beach under the watchful eye of
our lifeguard, or playing ping-pong. And then there are our camp traditions...
A big camp tradition is that upon completing the huge jigsaw puzzle, the camp is
rewarded with an ice cream social. The puzzle always manages to be completed.
Another tradition at camp is skit night. Our skits are legendary and range
from fantastic magic acts and near professional singing to viola ‘dramas’
and the history of the USA related with only one prop - a clothes hanger!
It is amazing how creative our campers can be.
Campers range in age from young preparatory students (5 or 6 years old) and
sometimes their parents who are also learning to play, to advanced musicians
in their teens and older. Students under 14 years of age must be accompanied
by an adult. Non-playing family members of these younger campers can find lots
to do during their child’s music sessions. There are hiking trails, fantastic
scenery, and quiet time for reading or work. The camp is located just down the
road from the casinos, bike trails, and boating. And, as budget permits, we
sometimes offer music appreciation classes for the family members.
Zephyr Music Camp does provide a great camp experience, but the musical
growth that occurs at all levels, within a few days, is incredible and
so worthwhile. So, please keep July 9-16 for advanced campers and July
16-21 for all campers, in mind for your summer plans this summer 2006,
and join us as we celebrate our tenth anniversary .
