VILLA SINFONIA FOUNDATION
FIRST QUARTER NOTES
2006 - 2007

Welcome back to another year of music-making!

Enclosed is a calendar for the first quarter and important forms that we need to have you read, fill-out, and return to us as soon as possible.

The Villa Sinfonia Foundation sponsored many exciting musical events this past year.  We had an all-time high - seven senior soloists in one year which necessitated an additional concert on the Broadmoor/Villa Sinfonia Foundation concert series! And this year we will have possibly even more seniors performing.

In July, Zephyr Music Camp celebrated its tenth  anniversary with two highly successful sessions featuring well-played and ambitious ensembles. The second session had the highest enrollment yet. Please read the enclosed Zephyr article with news about last summer and next year’s camp.

There is one big change this year for the Villa Sinfonia Foundation.  We have renamed our two orchestras.  The larger group, which meets from 2 - 3:45 on Sundays will now be known as Villa Sinfonia (a symphony orchestra is a large orchestra). The smaller group, which meets from 4 - 5:45 on Sundays has been renamed Villa Chamber Orchestra (chamber orchestra indicates a smaller group). It might be confusing at first, but the change makes sense.

I want to especially thank all of you who donated so generously in time and money to the Villa Sinfonia Foundation.  It’s because of you that we are able to give our students these wonderful performance opportunities.

Again, please read the enclosed materials and note the rehearsal days prior to concerts.  And please return the enclosed forms.  We would like to produce a zip code /phone list that will no doubt help with car-pooling, but to do that we need the Form I returned by everybody ASAP.  Thanks.

                                                Sincerely,

                                                            Lynn Oakley
                                                            President, Villa Sinfonia Foundation

Summer Chamber Music at Lake Tahoe

This past July marked the 10th year of Villa Sinfonia’s Zephyr Point chamber Music Camp at Lake Tahoe.  It was a wonderful two weeks, filled with challenging music, exciting performances, and lots of nonmusical fun, too - afternoons at the beach, ice cream socials, skit night . . .

During the first week of camp, more advanced ensembles performed quartets by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Ravel, Grieg, and Shostakovich.  The longer session gave students a chance to work on more difficult repertoire and to study the works more deeply.

The second week of camp involved musicians of all levels, from Suzuki Book 1 through the very advanced, and had the largest enrollment ever.  (We actually didn’t have enough room for everyone who had hoped to attend - so sign up early for next year!)

Many younger players had their first experience with being solely responsible for their part in an ensemble, and their success was a beautiful thing to behold!  The more advanced players tackled works by Mozart, Beethoven, Shostakovich and others.  It was truly amazing to see what was accomplished in 4 short days!

For many of us, going to the Zephyr Point Chamber Music Camp is the highlight of the year.  It’s a time for sharing our love of music with our family and friends - and it provides a dose of inspiration for the student in all of us!  Applications for next year’s camp will be available later this fall.  Session 1, for more advanced players (generally ages 14 and up), will be held July 1 - 8. (We’ll watch fireworks over the Lake!) Session 2, open to all levels, will be from July 8 - 13.

Silent Auction Fund-raiser

This year’s Silent Auction fund-raiser will again be held during the Holiday Concert, which will  be on  Sunday, December 3rd at 2:00 at Ecole Notre Dame des Victoires.  This is the largest fund-raising event that we have to support all the many VSF programs, and the key to its success is YOUR PARTICIPATION! We depend on families to bring in items that can be sold at the Auction.

Some of the most popular (and most highly bid on) items from past auctions include gift certificates to restaurants or stores, tickets to events such as Giants games or symphony/ballet/theater performances, wine, and items that are appropriate for gift-giving (gift baskets, jewelry, antiques, wine, tea sets, artwork, etc).  If you’ve been given something recently that’s just not “you”, here’s your chance to do some good with it - new items such as books, glassware, CDs, small appliances, toys and other kid items, etc. are all great!

IMPORTANT - Many businesses will donate to a nonprofit, educational organization such as the VSF - but it helps if the person soliciting the donations is a regular customer.  So please, please start to think about which businesses you might be able to contact.  Your personal request to a business that you support will be much more successful than an anonymous solicitation letter.

We will be giving families a Silent Auction packet with more information on how you can help with the Auction, an introductory letter about the VSF to use in requesting donations, and donation forms soon. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP!
